Community based Tsunami disaster relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction in Alappad PDF Print E-mail

Alappad is a fisher folk village in Kollam District in Kerala State.  The maximum death toll and tsunami devastation happened in this Panchayat in Kerala.  Sahayi’s intervention was in this Panchayat.

 

The project intervention was holistic in nature, combined with various relief and rehabilitation components.  The project activities consist of cleaning and removing of debris, provisions for food, drinking water, sanitation kits and kitchen utensils, nutritious food for children, dress for children and aged, temporary shelters and toilets, retrofitting, maintenance and repair of damaged houses, child and youth recreation programmes, exposure visits and study tour, school regeneration activities, psychosocial care and rehabilitation, promotion of micro enterprises/income generation programme etc.  The psycho social care programme has been organising with the partnership of DEEDS and NIMHANS, Bangalore.  The first phase of work completed in March, 2006 and the Phase II work started in April. One of the major thrust areas in the Phase II is psycho social rehabilitation of the tsunami affected families who require regular support to overcome their psycho social problems.  Intensive child recreation programme is also part of the activities in the current period.
